Martha Wainwright, Solus

Posted 919 days ago

In support, Teddy Thompson offers not only a fine set but a fitting backstory, stepping out of his father’s shadow. However, it is not the shadow of Loudon from which Martha must emerge, but that of Rufus.

With her cousin filling in Rufus’ parts from the re-released album the lights are on and Martha can certainly stand on her own.

Combining stella stage presence with a voice which feels like rough silk, Martha holds the suprisingly small audience in the palm of her hand. Crowd favourite ‘Bl**dy M*therf**king Assh*le’ is delivered with emotion which makes it justifiably comparable to Rufus’ Dinner at Eight. However, the closing showtune number, sung entirely in French and delivered with the confidence only found from a lifetime of music and performance, guarantees that Martha can deliver in her own right.
